This weekend saw Battersea Power Station, London transform into one of the most exciting snow
destinations on the planet. For the third year in a row, The Freeze Festival rolled into town, bringing with it the cream of British and International skier and snowboarders, a monstrous musical line-up, and one of the biggest crowds ever! The Girlylegs team were at the festival, soaking up the atmosphere and enjoying London’s best apres-ski!
Friday saw the Best of British, take to the towering kicker in a bid to win the coveted Battle of Britain crown. Crowds gathered as riders from our fair Isles, brought their best tricks to the playground, ensuring a showdown of epic proportions. Jenny Jones showed the young boys how its done, going big in the practice session. Despite the high winds and slow run in, the UK talent showed just how far British riding has come. Double flips were the battlefront of choice, with Billy Morgans double back taking the win.
The skiers took to the slope in the late afternoon, with Katie Summerhayes becoming the first female skier to compete alongside the boys in the Best of British competition. With the snow starting to melt the comp had to be pushed back a few hours for urgent repairs. Luckily enough, the crack team managed to patch up the war torn kicker and the competition got underway. In the end James Woods took the win, with Paddy Graham in second and Hector Barbour in third.
The evening saw Jaguar Skills mix it up with usual flair, before Nextmen and Roni Size gave the eardrums and dance floor a good ol’ fashioned battering!
Saturday was always set to be a massive day with the LG Snowboard FIS World Cup taking place. Thankfully the weather was kinder to the riders, with the wind dropping and clear skies. It was a slightly cooler day, helping to keep the snow in better shape for the comp. Jamie Nicholls qualified 3rd doing a super clean 10 double back cork, and was the crowd favorite throughout the event getting a massive cheer from what sounded like the whole of London. Jamie easily cleared the semis, through to the 12 man final, where he finished 7th.
Myself, Lou and Becky (The Girlylegs contingent) spent the evening dancing wildly with the thousands of other people watching Mark Ronson and his Halloween themed band. Jenny Jones and Aimee fuller are not just a force to be reckoned with on the slope, they tore up the dance floor with just as much ferocity!
Survivors of Saturday night could be seen on Sunday morning in various states of recovery, as the skiers geared up for the International Ski Big Air finals. Despite the jump looking in a similar state as the partygoers, the international talent continued throughout the comp to push themselves, and their riding. The Swedes swept through the podium, with Jacob Wester claiming first place. Jon Olsson returned to freeskiing form for runner-up status, and Henrik Harlaut took third place.
Sunday evening would have been a quieter affair had it not been for Jettblack thoroughly rocking the Relentless Stage, giving everyone a second wind!
We had an amazing time, thanks to everyone we met, partied and soldiered through the hangovers with! Looking forward to next year!
