Ayla Thidling Kite Surfing Snowboard — 28 November 2011
Adventure | Ayla Thidling’s Summer of Kite Surfing and Diving

At the moment I’m in Bora Bora in French Polynesia, the rain is coming down in sheets as the cyclone season is building and the wet season is well under way. It is the last stop on this season’s French Polynesia cruise, and we are here to check out possible kite surfing spots for next year. It actually looks pretty sick with a massive 3 foot deep lagoon and howling wind. Tomorrow I’m going out to give it one of the last blasts before it’s time to mothball the kite gear and head back to Europe!

This summer has been epic, with amazing places to do lots of sports in. I’ve been out on our SUP surrounded by reef sharks, deep sea fishing on ocean passages and caught yellow fin tuna, surfing and wakeboarding when we had no wind, body boarding next to the Teahupo wave (it was just way too massive and scary for me to get into!) and of course kite surfing.
The best of all this summer though, was going on a PADI Open Water dive course and getting my Junior Certificate to dive down to 60 feet.  We did some incredible drift dives where we were sucked along by a 6- knot current together with hundreds of sharks cruising the channel. There were also turtles, dolphins and all kinds of fish, and it was fantastic to be in the water with them all.

As always I’ve also had to study pretty hard so I can come home and enjoy winter. I do correspondence school and have to study 5 hours a day 6-7 days a week. I don’t have school holidays, and the longest time I’ve had off this summer is the five days when I did the PADI-course. In this way I’ve done most of my Grade 8 work, and can take a lot of time off this winter to snowboard.

I am stoked to be sponsored by Animal this coming season as well. They are looking after me really well with awesome stuff, both for the summer and winter, Thanks guys!! To improve on the snow I’m planning to do a lot of freestyle training with Animal’s head coach Steve Addicott, as well as team member Kate Foster on the Why Ain’t You Jibbin!? camps. I will head out to Laax at some point to get some practice in the pipe out there, and I’m also hoping to participate in some European competitions. BEO, the World Rookie Fest, Roxy Chicken Jam and of course the BRITS would be an amazing line up of events, but I have to see what I can get into as I may not qualify for them all.  If I am not accepted I’ll still be able to hang out with my friends and freeride in Chamonix instead.
