Fresh from winning the UK Skate Championship title, Lucy Adams has launched her own blog – http://lucyadamsskateboarder.blogspot.com/. We decided it was high time we caught up with her, and chatted about skating, life and the web.

You recently won the UK Championships (congratulations by the way!), and are currently the number one female skateboarder in the UK, but what does having a title like that mean to you?

Yeah absolutely stoked on winning the UK Champs this year! The title is totally rad, and it’s good feeling to know that people like the skateboarding I do!

What is it about skateboarding that has kept you involved and into it?

Skateboarding is just really cool and really fun. Going out skating is a great way to meet people, push yourself and just get some decent fresh air. It’s not just those things though, it’s more than that! Hard to explain exactly what it is but I definitely feel that I live the Skateboarding Lifestyle. I think about skating a lot during every day haha. I enjoy being part of a group of people in society that enjoy ripping, shredding, grinding and falling down sometimes. Learning new ticks gives you a feeling like nothing else and that constant progression keeps you hooked.

Where would your perfect skate trip be?

It would probably be a Lovenskate Trip but also with my girlfriend Emily, mates Tim nd Lec and the Bunce family in tow. We’d hit up loads of rad parks, probably including Blackpool, and there wouldn’t be scooter kids at any of them, just other skaters. Maybe also hit up the new park in Plymouth and head to Cornwall for some surf!

You have created your own blog, how important do you think having an online presence is for your career as an athlete?

Well I do think its important. I am reluctant to go on facebook because of certain reasons and I do think the blog idea is still a bit ‘check-me-out’! however, at least I can have control over the content and it’s just a place for me to talk about the stuff I take part in through skateboarding. Events, trips, even just lunch time skate sessions. From being a girl skater myself, I know that there are lots of others out there that enjoy watching footage from other female skaters and its inspiring to see photos and hearing stories. I hope that my blog just provides a place that girls can come and visit if they want to see new footage, pics and hearing the odd rambling from myself!

Back in the day competitions and jams were organised word of mouth, how do you think the use of social media has changed the skate scene in the UK?

Yeah absolutely. I guess it means it just gets to a wider audience. The Ladies Monthly events that Lois, Dani, and Sam were organising were mostly through facebook and email. I mean I don’t have facebook but I’ll still see e-flyers on websites and get emails from Jenna or Lois. Social Media has also meat that we all get to see the photos and footage of events and we usually get to see them pretty quickly! That is rad! Its definitely still great if Sidewalk or whoever cover things in real magazines but it’s sick to be able to see everyone’s skating in clips.

How do you feel the girls skate scene in the UK compares to other places in the world?

I think we’re really lucky to on quite a small island and therefore we are quite a tight knit bunch. We can pretty much be in a couple of different cities in a day and that means meeting up with different peeps easily. I think we’re all down for helping to grow the scene but in all individual ways. Some are great at organising events and meet ups, there’s Jenna with Rogue Skateboards and her filming projects, others of us who coach and instruct and even those like Harriet, Helen and Emma who draw, and create! We have a really diverse bunch of girls over here that are inspiring in so many ways!

What do you think needs to happen for more women to get into the sport, and carry on to professional levels?

The solution is quite obvious, that we need more girls to skate and in turn some support for our scene. But we can’t wait around and rely on the industry to help. It has to be an active push from all of us that have been around for a while and have experienced the set backs and challenges along the way. Websites like Girlylegs and other sources of information about our achievements and our scene are great in that they are providing a go-to platform for girls starting out in the various boardsports. We need to work in partnership to promote positively!!

Now that you have the UK title, whats your next goal?

Air on vert! hahaha thats always been a goal! I don’t know really, I don’t plan for things when it comes to skateboarding as it seems that spontaneity always comes out on top! Best trips and moments are those that take you by surprise.

Whats your advice for girls just starting out on a board?

Everybody was a beginner once. Even those that are skating fast and landing everything they seem to try, were once struggling to push along. Don’t be afraid of what anyone thinks, although that much easier said than done. Skateboarders will always offer support and advice so ask! Also, make sure you buy at the very lest your hardware from Skate owned shops! These guys know whats up and will not rip you off!

What do you get up to when your not skating?

I mostly hang out with my girlfriend Emily. We try to get out on our bikes now and again, or spend some time with Mason, her nephew. This winter I’m gonna try and learn to surf a bit too….check my blog to see how I get on with that! HA.

Thanks Girlylegs for the interview, thanks Lovenskate and DC for the support, thanks to Emily, Lec, Tim, Bunces, Freestyle Skateparks team, and anyone else that i forgot!
