Considering the ‘Girlylegs Guide to Road Trips‘ we put out a couple weeks ago, you would of thought that we’d be a little more prepared for our own little drive from Girlylegs HQ in Mayrhofen to The O’Neil Evolution in Davos…wrong.
Over sleeping by two hours we were already running late, but lets be realistic who ever really wants to get up at 5.30am?! Throwing our last minute over packed bags into the back of the car, we charged off down the road not even taking the time to check the weather, or infact where we were going?
Putting all our trust into our little SATNAV we started the snowy climb up what we both knew was going to be a closed mountain pass.. and it was. Fail number one.
Having to drive the long way round a moutain range, in horrendous driving conditions with no chains and fast depleting tank of petrol, all we could do was laugh and chalk it up as an mini adventure, plus cruising through places such as Cunter lightened the mood – we would of stopped for a photo, but we were too scared to lose momentum in the car incase we could never get it started again.
But our mini adventure soon changed to epic adventure all day event as we proceeded to get stuck not once, but twice in the relentlessly falling snow. After about 10 minutes of wheel spinning and getting nowhere some nice Swiss gentlemen came and pushed us out and we on our way again.
On entering Davos, our fears were confirmed and it became very obvious that we would not be getting back out of there without a set of chains, that is if we will ever make it out at all.
With a bit more getting the car stuck, we finally got to our hotel, which somehow we managed to get directly opposite the course and with a bedroom window looking right at the kicker – score!
We headed down to the riders tent to meet up with Katie Blundell, who was eagerly awaiting our arrival after spending the last few days with an apartment full of the O’Neill boys. With a few hours before the womens open practice, we chilled with the GB Freestyle Team who were in high spirits considering Billy Morgan qualifying first in his heat and Jamie Nicholls second in his.
Unfortunately all of the British girls, expect one (O’Neil Team rider and Girlylegs favourite Katie Blundell) have pulled out of the event, Aimee Fuller is still recovering from a bruised heel, India Stevenson decided to stay stateside following the cancellation of the BEO and with the Halfpipe event being pulled here at the Evolution that meant Kate Foster was out too.
All the boys headed home in search of warmth and internet, but we stayed, watched and supported Katie as she had a practice on the rails. With the blizzard finally setting in, the lifts were shut and was practice called off.
Heading back to the hotel, it was a quick turn around for us and we headed out for a ‘directors dinner’ in a swanky Swiss restaurant. A few rounds of Lobster and a bottle of red later we ploughed back through the snow for an early night in hope of first lifts and fresh lines in the morning.
Waking up to the ridiculous amounts of snow and news that the mountain was shut, there is not much to do except catch up on some work, and watch out the window for any movement on the course. If all still goes ahead the women are scheduled at 2:45, but if the lifts open before that, we’ll def be heading for the trees and getting involved in the powder.
Much love, Nade and Liz x
