Competition Snowboard — 07 January 2012
Snowboard | Spencer O’Brien Wins O’Neill Evolution 2012

After days of heavy snow, this morning we woke to a calmer, clearer and brighter atmosphere here in Davos.  It was an early start for the girls with training kicking off for the Women’s Big Air Semi-Finals at 10am, and thanks to a break in the weather the course was looking well groomed and less like a powder run!

Unfortunately, because of staffing issues the webcast didn’t go ahead, so all of you at home didn’t get to witness our very own Katie Blundell take on her first ever 6*TTR event!  Stoked to see her compete, proud of you love!  The 25 girls wasted no time getting down to business,  with Austrian rider Anna Gasser setting the pace in her first run.

Girls were throwing it down left, right and center in a bid to take part in the 8 girl final. Charlotte Van Gils was the only girl to take on the larger kicker, but unfortunately came up short on a front 540.  Cheryl Maas  proved exactly why she was recently voted Snowboarder Magazine’s Girl Rider of the Year by throwing down a massive stylish Backside 720 followed by a boardslide on the rail.

After the second runs were done, and the eight finalists were finalised we took a very quick tea break in the riders lounge where everyone seemed to be throwing pasta and soup into their faces while warming up, before needing to head out into the cold again.

The final was dominated by Canadian rider Spencer O’Brien who put down a 90.50point run on her first go with a huge frontside 720 and gap to noseblunt on the rail.  Sina Candrian did her best to take the top spot but none of her runs could quite shift Spencers lead.  And just because she can, Spencer O’Brien decide to beat her initial score and put down a solid 93.45points in her follow up run with yet another stylish frontside 720, this time followed by a gap to frontboard slide. Boom.

Having taken first place, Spencer has now pushed her way into 2nd place on the TTR rankings and got her invite to the Snowboard World Championships next month. So how do you celebrate banking $20,000?  Well Spencer has changed her flights and is planning on sticking around in Davos to shred the powder!
